There is a huge need to people to cash their payroll checks. People cash checks at a variety of stores: Grocery Stores, small Neighborhood Markets, Liquor Stores, Convenience Stores and Check Cashing Stores. Each has their own way in which they operate.
Grocery Stores – are generally full sized supermarkets that cash checks for customers. They have evolved into check cashing as a response to customer demand. They want to accommodate their customers by cashing their checks and typically employ a “voucher” system whereby they cash the customer’s checks, but give they a “voucher” (also known as store script/credit) which the customer can use as cash in the check-out lane. This helps to insure that they customer buys their groceries at the store.
Credit Vouchers
Neighborhood Markets – are small stores located in the neighborhoods and are walking-accessible by many of the customers. They are typically centered around grocery items, or perhaps a meat section, but also provide many other products and services. These stores cater to regular customers and have also evolved into cashing checks for customers. Many times they only cash checks for known customers, or checks for local businesses. They are many times reluctant to move past cashing checks for “locals” because of the risk typically associated with check cashing. They would probably cash more checks IF they had a system that eliminated the fraud/losses.
Liquor Stores – also cash checks for “locals” and checks of known businesses. They typically have the same concerns as Neighborhood Markets. They would probably cash more checks IF they had a system that eliminated the fraud/losses.
Convenience Stores – typically don’t cash checks as much as the other categories above. Their customer base is usually shares some of the same customer base as the other categories. They don’t cash checks with the same regularity as the other category stores. They would probably cash more checks IF they had a systems that eliminated the fraud/losses.
Check Cashing Stores – check cashing is their business. They typically offer other related services such as: Money Orders, Money Transfer, etc. One of the main problems they deal with is the fact that most of their income is derived from check cashing – and the associated losses to fraud that is typically seen.
